The soil food web

Healthy soil teems with bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, arthropods, and earthworms that cycle nutrients and structure soil. Plants exude sugars from roots to feed beneficial microbes in exchange for nutrients and disease protection. University of Minnesota Extension describes living soil as the foundation of a healthy garden where biology does much of the fertility work.

Fungal networks

Mycorrhizal fungi extend hyphae into soil, dramatically increasing root reach and delivering phosphorus and water. Many vegetables form these partnerships. Fungi prefer undisturbed soil with continuous root presence and woody or fibrous organic matter. Bare fallow and frequent rototilling break hyphal networks that take seasons to rebuild.

Minimal tillage practices

University of Minnesota Extension recommends reducing tillage intensity to preserve soil structure and biology. No-till and low-till methods plant into undisturbed soil or kill cover crops in place. Disturb only the narrow zone needed for seeding or transplanting. Compost and amendments go on the surface and integrate through worm and root activity.

Biological inputs and rotation

Compost, aged manure, leaf mold, and worm castings inoculate soil with diverse organisms. Mulches feed surface decomposers. University of Minnesota Extension groups crops by family for rotation to maintain soil health and break pest cycles. Avoid broad-spectrum fungicides and unnecessary soil sterilization that set back microbial communities.
