Hot vs. cold composting
Hot composting actively manages the pile to reach high temperatures that kill many weed seeds and pathogens and finishes faster. Cold composting simply accumulates materials and lets them decompose slowly with minimal turning. Both produce usable compost; hot methods require more attention to the carbon-nitrogen balance and pile size. University of Minnesota Extension describes both approaches for home gardeners.
What to add
Green materials supply nitrogen: vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, fresh grass clippings, and manure from herbivores. Brown materials supply carbon: dried leaves, straw, shredded paper, and wood chips. Aim for roughly three parts brown to one part green by volume. Chop large items to speed decomposition. Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, and pet waste, which attract pests and may harbor pathogens.
Carbon-nitrogen balance and moisture
A pile that smells like ammonia has too much nitrogen; add browns. A pile that will not heat up or smells sour may be too wet or lack nitrogen; add greens and dry browns while turning. The pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge: moist but not dripping. Turn the pile periodically to introduce oxygen, which aerobic bacteria need to break down material efficiently.
Troubleshooting and using finished compost
Rodents indicate meat or uncovered food scraps; bury kitchen waste in the center of the pile. Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling with no recognizable original materials. Work finished compost into beds before planting or use as mulch. University of Minnesota Extension recommends compost as a primary way to build organic matter in home gardens.
