Why containers dry faster
Potting mix has less water-holding capacity than native soil and exposes more surface area per plant volume to sun and wind. Roots cannot reach beyond the container walls for additional moisture. Small pots heat quickly, accelerating evaporation. University of Minnesota Extension notes that container plants often need more frequent watering than in-ground plantings.
Potting mix and water retention
Quality potting mix balances drainage and retention with peat, coir, compost, and perlite. Garden soil alone compacts in containers and drains poorly. Adding coir increases water holding without waterlogging. Mulching the container surface cuts evaporation. As roots fill the pot, watering frequency increases because less mix remains to store water.
Watering technique
University of Minnesota Extension recommends watering container plants until water runs from drainage holes, then allowing the top inch of mix to dry before watering again. Check moisture by lifting the pot or probing the soil. Group containers by water needs so thirsty plants do not share a schedule with drought-tolerant ones.
Fertilizer and water together
Container vegetables benefit from regular light feeding because nutrients leach with each watering. University of Minnesota Extension describes combining fertilizing and watering for container plants. Alternate fertilized water with plain water to prevent salt buildup. Flush containers monthly during heavy feeding periods.
