Why rotation works

Many soilborne diseases and pests specialize on related crops. Planting tomatoes in the same spot year after year allows pathogens like verticillium wilt to build up. Rotation interrupts those cycles by depriving pests of their host for one or more seasons. Different plant families also extract and replenish nutrients differently, reducing depletion of any single element.

Plant family groupings

University of Minnesota Extension groups crops by botanical family when planning rotation. Solanaceae includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and potatoes. Brassicaceae covers cabbage, broccoli, kale, and radishes. Cucurbits are cucumbers, squash, and melons. Legumes include beans and peas and fix nitrogen. Apiaceae covers carrots, celery, and parsley. Alliums are onions, garlic, and leeks.

A four-bed rotation example

Divide the garden into four beds and move families clockwise each year. Bed one: legumes and leafy greens. Bed two: brassicas and alliums. Bed three: solanaceae and corn. Bed four: cucurbits and roots. After year four, each family returns to its starting bed having spent three years elsewhere. Adjust groupings to match what you actually grow.

Disease-specific intervals

University of Minnesota Extension recommends avoiding the same plant family in a bed for two to four years where disease has been a problem. Tomatoes and peppers should avoid ground previously occupied by solanaceae for three to four years where wilt is present. Keep records of what grew where; a simple sketch or garden journal prevents accidental repeats.
