Crops that prefer direct sowing
Root vegetables including carrots, beets, radishes, and parsnips should almost always be direct-sown because transplanting distorts roots. Prepare a fine, weed-free seedbed and keep soil moist until germination.
Crops that benefit from transplants
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and celery need several weeks indoors in most climates to mature before frost ends the season. Brassicas like broccoli and cabbage tolerate transplanting well and gain weeks on the calendar. Onions from seed are often started indoors or purchased as sets. Squash, melons, and cucumbers can be direct-sown or started in biodegradable pots a few weeks early. Lettuce and kale work either way depending on season; transplants help in heat when direct sowing germination is poor.
