What pH measures
Soil pH indicates acidity or alkalinity on a scale of zero to fourteen, with seven being neutral. Most vegetables grow best between 6.0 and 7.0, where essential nutrients are readily available. Below 5.5, phosphorus and micronutrients become less available even if present in soil. Above 7.5, iron and manganese deficiencies appear even in fertile soil.
How pH affects nutrient availability
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium uptake all depend on pH. Acidic soils can release aluminum at levels toxic to roots. Alkaline soils bind iron, causing chlorosis in crops like blueberries and potatoes. University of Minnesota Extension notes that fall is a good time to test and amend pH so changes take effect before spring planting.
Testing your soil
Home test kits give a rough estimate; university or commercial lab tests are more accurate and include nutrient recommendations. Sample from several spots in the garden, mix sub-samples, and send the composite. Test every two to three years or after major amendments. Separate samples for beds with different histories, such as a blueberry area versus a vegetable row.
Raising pH with lime
Agricultural lime raises pH in acidic soils. The amount depends on current pH, target pH, and soil texture; clay needs more than sand. Apply in fall if possible so lime reacts before spring planting. Pelletized lime is easier to spread than powdered. Wood ash also raises pH but should be used sparingly because it is concentrated and can over-correct quickly.
Lowering pH with sulfur
Elemental sulfur lowers pH in alkaline soils, but the process is slow and may take months. Sulfur is preferred for long-term adjustment because aluminum sulfate can build up salts. For acid-loving crops like blueberries, amend planting holes with peat or compost and maintain mulch rather than expecting quick shifts in native soil pH. Container growing allows precise pH control with appropriate potting mixes.
