The three primary nutrients
NPK stands for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the three nutrients plants need in largest quantities. Nitrogen fuels leafy growth and deep green color. Phosphorus supports root development, flowering, and fruit set. Potassium strengthens overall plant vigor, disease resistance, and fruit quality. All three are essential; the right balance depends on crop type and growth stage.
Reading the label
Fertilizer bags display three numbers such as 10-10-10 or 5-10-5, representing the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium respectively. University of Minnesota Extension notes that a soil test should guide fertilizer choices rather than guessing. The label also lists other ingredients and may specify whether nitrogen is fast- or slow-release.
Matching nutrients to growth stage
Leafy crops like lettuce and spinach benefit from adequate nitrogen throughout growth. Fruiting crops like tomatoes need moderate nitrogen early but less once flowering begins, with continued phosphorus and potassium for fruit development. Root crops need phosphorus for root formation but excess nitrogen can produce lush tops at the expense of roots. Legumes fix their own nitrogen and rarely need additional nitrogen fertilizer.
Avoiding over-fertilization
More fertilizer does not mean better growth and can harm plants and waterways. Excess nitrogen produces soft, pest-prone foliage and delayed fruiting. Salt buildup from overapplication burns roots, especially in containers. A soil test tells you what your garden actually needs. When in doubt, compost provides a mild, balanced source of nutrients with little risk of burn.
