How roots respond to water
Plant roots grow toward moisture. Light, frequent watering keeps roots concentrated in the top inch or two of soil, where they dry out quickly in heat. Deep watering encourages roots to extend deeper, giving plants access to a larger soil volume and greater drought tolerance. University of Minnesota Extension recommends applying about one inch of water per week for most vegetable gardens.
Checking soil moisture
Before watering, check soil moisture two inches below the surface. If soil is dry at that depth, it is time to water. University of Minnesota Extension notes that sandy soils drain faster and may need water twice per week during hot weather. A rain gauge helps track how much water sprinklers or hoses actually deliver.
Signs of overwatering
Yellowing lower leaves, wilting despite wet soil, and sour smells from the root zone indicate excess moisture. Roots need air as well as water; saturated soil suffocates them and invites root rot. Clay soils and containers without drainage are especially prone. Let the top inch dry before watering again, and always check soil moisture before adding more.
Putting deep watering into practice
Apply water slowly enough that it soaks in rather than running off. Deliver the weekly inch in one or two thorough sessions rather than many shallow sprinkles. In sandy soil, shorter but still thorough sessions may be needed because water drains faster. Mulch helps retain moisture between deep waterings.
